Home Undergoing Budget Renovations

Will the age of my house affect being able to board the attic?

Deciding if your attic is suitable for an attic boarding installation needn’t be a headache, especially when it comes to an old attic conversion. Some may think that it may not even be available but with our expertise and knowledge, we’ve got the solution for you.

The versatility of our products

We understand that not all homes are built the same, especially as typical house building and installation have changed over the years. Certain regulations and building requirements that are typically followed in new builds around the country may be more recent than homes that are still being used – possibly the house you own.

Through our research and development, we wanted to ensure that our products, such as StoreFloor and StoreFloor Compact, are available to the masses. These products allow the general public to not only improve the level of usable space within their home but to also increase the value of their home.

If a house is well looked after, its age shouldn’t matter. Whether you’re living in a house originally built in the Victorian, Edwardian, or even Georgian era, our old attic conversion solutions provide the ability for attic boarding in houses without issues. Some may crop up during the installation process so it’s always best to be prepared.

You may be reading this and thinking to yourself – I have a new build home or a more recently constructed home so would I encounter any issues? We would suggest reading on as in some unique cases, you may experience some hurdles even in a house that is only 5-10 years old – for example.

How to prepare for possible mishaps or issues

It’s always best to be prepared for a worst-case scenario, just in case the worst possible issues were to happen. If they do show up within the installation process, having a solution is ideal.

One area which you may need to be prepared for is uneven joists. An issue like this could be down to the joists moving over time or possibly that they were installed that way during initial construction. Warping or testing of the joists may also be an issue in some older builds. If this is the case, we recommend mounting out StoreFloor products over such issues if needed. A recommended alternative is to acquire the 1.8m cross-beams to reduce cutting and to ensure you have a saw available just in case.

Similarly to the warping and twisting of joists, some may even be higher than others. Raised joists could again be related to the installation of moving over time. The solution is similar to the previous one – spanning over with our StoreFloor attic boarding is the recommended solution.

Depending on the style of the roof which your house has, as they differ depending on the era, the interior space may be slightly more cramped than a typical new build. To maximize the headroom and overall attic space, we recommend picking up the StoreFloor Compact solution. This should provide the correct parts and fully make use of the available space. If you’re unsure of the allowance your attic is providing, we also recommend ordering different sizes of parts to see which would fit the most efficiently – testing either the 1.2m or 1.8m cross-beams. No need to worry about the cost, as parts that you don’t use, we will be happy to provide a full refund – as long as you’re happy to cover the return postage.
