How LoftZone StoreFloor Helps You to Weatherize Your Home

To weatherize your home is the practice of protecting a building or property and its interior from things like sunlight, precipitation, and wind. This helps to reduce your energy consumption, improve the comfort of your home, and optimize your energy efficiency. So, how can LoftZone help you to weatherize your home?

Attic Insulation & Why It’s Vital to the Weatherization in Your Home

Home weatherization is important to keep yourselves warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. Attic insulation is a key part of any weatherization process.

For a typical house, 25% of heat loss in the winter is lost through the attic and roof; and in the summer, the sun’s heat shines down onto your roof and into your home, making it hotter.

The US Department of Energy recommends between 11” and 21” of insulation, depending on where you live. This usually means that the top of the insulation sits above your joists.

There are several schemes throughout the USA and elsewhere, which may offer you a grant for installing insulation in your home. We recommend checking with your county, state, or energy utility wherever you live.

However, insulation partly functions by trapping air inside it, and so compressing insulation stops it from working. In tests conducted at the National Physical Laboratory in England, compressing insulation from 11” down to 4” halved its effectiveness! This means that you cannot simply fix boards onto the joists in your attic if you are trying to weatherize your home, but attic flooring is exactly what people want! Many householders want to use their attic space for storage or access purposes, so they remove or squash the insulation above the joists; not realizing the high impact that this has on the insulation’s efficiency.

How to Weatherize Your Home with Loft Boards

Research in the UK showed that 80% of people use flooring in their attic. Rates of this in the USA vary by state, but in some cases, it’s so common that there is even a term for it: a “Texas basement”. This means a floored attic space! If you want more details on all this research, then you can read our Academic Analysis paper.

That’s where the LoftZone design comes in. LoftZone StoreFloor is the fastest and easiest way to raise attic flooring above the full depth of insulation. This means that you don’t risk decreasing the insulation. It comes in two heights to suit your insulation depth, and it strengthens your joists too by acting as a lattice beam.

It’s designed to be suited around any obstructions already in the attic, like air conditioning units. LoftZone StoreFloor won Best New Invention at the Ideal Home Show in Great Britain. It has been fitted in tens of thousands of homes across the world – and in every state in the USA (except for Hawaii – so far!).
