How To Make The Most Out Of Your Attic Space

If you are looking for a way to make the most out of your attic space, then this blog is for you. It’s easy to turn an unused, dusty, and boring floor into a fresh, new storage space. The best part about making the most out of your attic space is that it doesn’t require any major construction work other than introducing a few exciting features!

All it takes is some creativity.

Storage Space

You can choose how much space you want to use for your storage so that you can avoid converting your entire attic, but it could be an idea to invest in some stackable boxes which you can label to redistribute your storage easier.

Due to an attic being dusty and dirty, buying some closed containers with lids are a good find. It’s worth looking to see how much storage you have so that you can buy the right size and shaped boxes for all your items.

If you wanted to be more eco-friendly and add some of your own DIY skills in your attic, then perhaps make your own boxes out of some recyclable material. Creating your own bespoke storage to fit around your attic space can help you to get rid of those awkward gaps to make the most out of the space in your attic. Using every inch!

To make life easier, place all the things you use most often towards the attic hatch, and less used items further away, your attic will then be organised without the need to rummage about.

Boarding for Your Storage

It is useful to install some attic boarding to enable you to make the most out of your attic space in terms of storage. The more boarding you have, the more storage space you get.

Without placing any attic boards, the attic can only support the weight of the ceiling. It is important that you spread the weight evenly across the attic floor so that it is not all condensed into one space.

At LoftZone, we have designed our StoreFloor boarding system which is the strongest raised system available! LoftZone StoreFloor can hold up to an impressive 500kg per square meter due to its Tri- and Uni-Supports made from extremely strong engineering-grade recycled plastic, making it much stronger than the joists of a typical attic. That’s over 10X the amount that is recommended on a regular boarding structure!

It is important not to overload the joists as it will cause them to bend and snap through the plasterboards below. Remember – attic joists are intended to support the weight of the roof and ceiling, nothing else. So, if you are considering having more than 40kg then look at our StoreFloor boarding system.

Most people like to board their entire attic, but you don’t have to. Our StoreFloor is modular so you can start and then build more later when your storage requirements go up. We are flexible and we build to your preferences – so it’s always your choice.

Our StoreFloor is exactly what it sounds like: an area of storage right at your feet.

Attic Insulation Efficiency

Please remember, placing things on top of insulation (especially if it’s laid at 90 degrees across the joists) can squash it – leading to areas of the house being damp and poorly insulated. You can save a large sum of money if you invest in good insulation and our StoreFloor raises your attic floor above it so that this incident will never happen.

Make It Your Own

All attics are different, you know yours better than anyone. It’s your responsibility to load it sensibly without overloading the joists enough that they snap.
